Smart Hinge: A self powered RF transmitting door hinge for security applications
SmartHinge
MI3 is currently developing a truck security system. What is unique about our approach is the use of a self powered cargo container hinge, referred to as the "SmartHinge™". This hinge uses piezoelectric (pressure-electric) actuators to produce a low voltage pulse every time the hinge is moved. This, in turn, powers a miniature low power radio frequency transmitter. The transmitter provides a coded pulse that identifies the hinge that is actuated. A nearby receiver system picks up this pulse and can record the event, trigger a remote alarm, or transmit the event information via satellite to a distant monitoring station.
